I’ve been working in a
private school for about 6 months, by the name itself we actually know how the
school programs work. Private school means we got less government’s hands on us
and run the school with our own creations based on well known and trusted programs.
It does mean we should take
the examples from the developed countries that already got many great ways in
teaching the kids. But not just the way in teaching, the way their teachers behave
is something we shouldn’t miss.
Teacher,
somebody who give almost all of their time and mind on the students just to
make sure they will get enough help in making their future life
That’s how teachers in many
developed countries work, they fall down deep into the student’s problems and sometimes
unknowingly they’ve gone too far and get their life distracted, sacrifice their
own life to save their beloved students.
We can take the example
from Jodi Schmidt, a teacher from Oakfield Elementary who saved her sick student
named Natasha. Tasha had been missing the school over trips to the hospital for
dialysis. Jodi couldn’t just sit and watch Tasya’s problem. She came up with a
plan and decided to act. Eventually, she successfully made Tasya coming back to
the school by donoring her own organ. Jodi gave us the truly meaning of helping
a student. She’s willing to know what really happened to the student. She is
one over millions in the world, hardly to find a great teacher like her
nowadays because following her step is almost impossible.
Then how to be at least
a ‘mini’ Jodi who helped the student wholeheartedly?
The basic thing is be their friend first, we must observe them, understand what
they like, what they hate, and what kind of problems they’re facing off, and of
course try our best to help them out.
But the next question is
have we found those characteristics here on our teachers in Indonesia? Do they ever
have that thought in their mind? Some might be do, but most of them don’t.
Throwing back to 2014, do you still remember a
horrendous scandal that happened in JIS Indonesia? A kindergarten student got
sexually abused by the school’s janitors, unbelievably it was happen in the
school! And to add insult to the injury, it was discovered in several days
after his mom realized there’s a change in her son’s behavior. I mean how could
the teachers there didn’t know what’s happen to the kid right after the
incident occurred? The teachers should pay a good attention on the students and
should be the first one who know if there’s a change in them.
But how can we change
this appalling condition if our teachers here still thinking that being a
teacher is no more than helping the kids to get a good grade? The worst part is
they feel like they are so much up above the students, superior who need to
be respected no matter what, even when they did a mistake they never want to bring it up and always do feel right. In here, the teachers got a big pride, and when the students hurt it, the teacher will let the students get to see the vengeance by lowering their grade and so on. What they want is to be feared by
the students and showing their authoritative air off. The affection between the students and the teachers is not the priority, they feel like their droop-esteem will drop when
they are get along too well with the students.
In my personal opinion,
It’s a big mistake indeed.
The students won’t ever
open themselves to anybody who doesn’t deserve it. Once they close their heart,
it will be hard to take them out.
What we all need now is
a major change, change in the teacher’s mind. Just please don’t be blind, i
absolutely know that being a teacher in Indonesia is not an easy job, it got a lot of
complicated problems. But trust me, even i still inexperienced teacher, i do
believe seeing our students got successful life is priceless, i always get a
tremendous happiness whenever i see my student’s improvement in any field, this
is the best gift that can please our heart.
We are not good teachers yet, but we must be willing to be one.
