Teaching Method : Bingo Game For Evaluation

Mr. Wiki said “Bingo is a game of chance played with different randomly drawn numbers which players match against numbers that have been pre-printed on 5x5 cards......”

Hmm Mr. Wiki, the fact that i'm not and i will never be a gambler, i really don't have any idea about that kind of bingo. We’re just gonna play a different type of bingo, which more “student friendly”, that is “Lines Bingo”.  In Lines Bingo there are many kinds of grids people usually play, like 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5 grids. But for the starter, i'd like to choose the 3x3 grids.

What we must make is a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line to get a “bingo”.

When somebody already get the pattern, as the winner, that ‘body’ can shout “Bingo!”. End of the game.

Now, how to adapt this game to the lesson? Before we start the game, it’s better for the teacher to make 9 questions about the latest topic that the students have just learned. After that...
  1. The students need to make 3x3 grids on a paper (9 big columns)
  2. Tell them to give the number (1 to 9) for each column RANDOMLY, up to the kids. like this...
  3. Then start to give the question by the number, every student will have different place to put the answer. Look at the example..

  4. Give the time limit to write down the answer, 30 second to one minute, depends on the material or the subject (math will need more time)
  5. Give an ‘O’ when they get it right and an ‘X’ when they get it wrong or when the time is up.

  6. Keep giving the question, till they can make the ‘Bingo’. Once the students make it, they can stop playing right away and get 100 point. For those who haven't, they have to keep playing.
  7. When some of the students still cant make the ‘Bingo’ till the last question, the teacher can give the point depend on how many question they can get it right (10 point for each question).
I used this game in the evaluation phase for 6th, 11th, and 12th grade, and fortunately it did work really well. The age matter was not a problem at all, in my experience, elementary or senior high school gave the same outcome.

Instead of giving them the worksheet that might seems so boring, making it as a game like this will be more fun. I assume, this game not only maintain the kids’ interest but also help the students to memorize all the materials that have been given to them. Don’t you believe it?  Here’s the outcome of my lesson by using this game, hopefully it can prove something. Lol.

*Thanks to ms. Monita who taught me how to play this game :)
